A man who told police he called in a threat to a middle school because he had "been out late drinking the night before" is now charged with a crime.

Justin Hopp, 30, of Milaca, was charged this week with one count of making threats of violence, a felony, in connection with a Nov. 10 voicemail left at Rosemount Middle School.

The threat put the school into lockdown, the Pioneer Press reported at the time, but it didn't affect classes.

According to the criminal complaint:

The voicemail, left on the school's attendance line around 4:30 a.m., said: "Today's the day. You're all dead, boom, boom, today, today dead, done, boom."

Police responded and determined there was no active threat, but continued to investigate. Cellphone records and GPS data eventually led them to Hopp.

Hopp told police he was working construction on an apartment building near the middle school at the time of the incident.

He eventually admitted to police that he called in the threat, saying he did so "because he did not want to go into work that morning as he had been out late drinking the night before."

He also said he didn't think it would "turn into such a big deal."

If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison and/or up to a $3,000 fine.

His first court appearance is scheduled for March 14, the Pioneer Press reports.
