Charges: Driver caused fiery, fatal crash after running red light at speed
A Minneapolis man has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide after a fiery crash left a man dead near the Lowry Avenue Bridge.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced charges Tuesday against Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamed, 22. Mohamed is also charged with two counts of criminal vehicular operation.
It comes after the three-vehicle crash on Monday at Lowry Avenue Northeast and Marshall Street Northeast. Police found a Chevy Tahoe in flames, with the driver trapped inside.
The driver, identified as 35-year-old David Olson, of Coon Rapids, died at the scene from thermal and inhalation injuries.
According to witnesses, Mohamed’s Honda Accord sped through Lowry Avenue before crashing his car into the Tahoe. Both cars then crashed into a Honda Odyssey, the driver of which also sustained injuries.
Police followed a trail of blood to behind a nearby building where they found Mohamed. He told officers he was not in any of the involved vehicles before stating he was a passenger.
Traffic video shows Mohamed running the red light at the intersection.
Two passengers were also in the Accord, but say they have no knowledge of who else was in the car. Officers also found alcohol, marijuana and an unlabeled pill bottle in the Accord.
