A Stillwater man is charged with kidnapping and raping an 18-year-old woman he found passed out and alone on the street.

Jeremiah Daniel Johnson, 26, is accused of taking the woman back to his apartment in Stillwater and raping her on Sunday, after he found her "intoxicated, passed out and incapacitated" next to a telephone pole in St. Paul.

According to the Washington County Attorney's Office, Johnson spotted the car at Edgerton St. and Case Ave. E. He then proceeded to get out of his truck, pick her up with her arms dangling "limp and lifeless" the attorney's office says, and drove off with her.

The victim was found in the the hallway of the apartment building where Johnson lives, leading St. Paul and Stillwater police to his apartment, where they found evidence of sexual activity, according to the charges.

"Stranger rapes are by far the most difficult to prove in most circumstances," Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said in a statement. "The St. Paul and Stillwater police, as well as the citizens who came forward to help in this case, are to be commended for their efforts in bringing this investigation to a successful close. Our office will do all in its power to bring justice to the victim."

Johnson has been charged with kidnapping, and both third and fourth degree criminal sexual conduct. He appeared in district court Tuesday where his bail was set at $400,000 unconditional and $100,000 with conditions.

He will next appear in court on July 15.
