Charges: MN man drank 24 beers, suffocated infant son

A Blooming Prairie man drank more than two dozen beers before falling asleep on the couch with his infant son and suffocating the child, according to charges filed in Steele County.

Cory Stucky, 30, was charged last week with second-degree manslaughter and felony child endangerment in the death of his 8-week-old son back in July, the Owatonna Peoples Press reports.

Police were called to the home of Stucky and his girlfriend the morning of July 18 on a report of a child not breathing.

According to the criminal complaint, Stucky told officers that he fell asleep with the baby on his chest and woke up to his girlfriend screaming and crying that the boy wasn't breathing, FOX 9 reports.

At first, Stucky denied he'd been drinking and said only that he was a heavy sleeper.

But his girlfriend told authorities they had invited neighbors over the previous day and that Stucky had consumed at least 24 beers between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. He then went to a nearby bar with friends until around midnight, according to FOX 9.

About an hour later, Stucky got up to feed the baby and fell asleep with the child on the couch. His girlfriend found them about 7:15 the next morning, with Stucky lying on the couch and the child face down, underneath Stucky's arm, the Peoples Press reports.

An autopsy ruled the baby died of asphyxiation, according to KARE 11.

Stucky made his first appearance Monday in Steele County Court. He was released on the condition that he not use alcohol or other drugs. His next appearance is set for Jan. 4, according to the Peoples Press.
