Charges say UMD student was killed during an attempted robbery

Grahek is also the son of a St. Paul police sergeant.

Two people have been charged in connection with the shooting death of University of Minnesota Duluth student William Grahek.

Grahek, who is the son of a St. Paul police sergeant, was killed during an attempted robbery at his Duluth home, according to charges against the five people arrested last week in connection to the incident.

Here's who is charged and with what:

  • Tara Rai Baker, 22, faces charges of second-degree murder and first-degree aggravated robbery.
  • Xavier Alfred Haywood, 26, is charged with aiding an offender.
  • Noah King, 18, is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree attempted aggravated robbery.
  • Deandre Davenport, 21, is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree attempted aggravated robbery.
  • Noah Baker, 19, is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree attempted aggravated robbery.

According to the criminal complaints:

Haywood told King, Davenport and Noah Baker that Grahek had a large amount of cash and controlled substances in a safe in his room, and they should rob him.

The three men (not including Haywood) went to the house and demanded Grahek turn over his "stuff." Grahek refused, and Davenport shot him twice between 1:53 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Feb. 14.

The suspects then fled the scene in Tara Baker's Jeep. She told police she's the only one who drives the Jeep because no one else has a valid license.

Later that night, Tara Baker drove her brother – Noah Baker – to a hotel in Superior, Wisconsin, where they met Davenport. Haywood had made the hotel arrangements, telling one of the suspects they needed to lay low.

Investigators recovered a safe from Grahek's room that contained controlled substances and cash.

If convicted, those charged with second-degree murder could face up to 40 years in prison, while attempted aggravated robbery carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years and/or a fine of $17,500. Haywood, if convicted, could face up to three years in prison and/or a fine of $5,000 for the aiding an offender charge.
