A St. Cloud man has been charged with two counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly chopping the tips of a man's fingers off.

The alleged crime unfolded around 1:45 p.m. on Friday, June 22, when St. Cloud police were dispatched to an apartment on the 900 block of 8th Avenue South for a knife complaint.

Upon arrival, they found an adult male victim who said his neighbor, identified as 67-year-old Clarence Junior Hilliard, Jr., chopped the tips of two of his fingers off.

The victim told police that he went to Hilliard's apartment to give him cigarettes, but after knocking on the door he was told to go away. Instead, he kept knocking, and when Hilliard opened the door he swung something, slicing off the tips of two fingers.

Officers saw the injuries on the man's left hand and later found one tip of a finger outside Hilliard's door and another inside the door.

After arresting Hilliard police searched the apartment and found knives, a sword and a machete with what they believed to be blood on it. The machete was sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for testing.

Unfortunately, doctors were unable to re-attach the tips of the victim's fingers.

Hilliard has been charged with 1st-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing great bodily harm, and 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing substantial bodily harm – both are felonies.
