Charges: Student raped a girl in the locker room at a local high school

The victim reported the incident right away.

An 18-year-old student is accused of raping a girl in a the boys' locker room at Shakopee High School.

Angel Pablo Torres, Jr. was charged Thursday with first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection to Tuesday's incident.

According to the criminal complaint, Torres asked the 17-year-old victim to leave class to get a drink of water with him at the drinking fountain. She did, and then he grabbed her by the wrist and took her into the handicapped stall in the boys' locker room, where he raped her, charges say.

The victim told police she kept telling him "no" and tried to pull away, but he was too strong, the complaint says. Torres told her not to tell anyone what happened, but the victim reported it right away to an officer who works at the school, charges note.

Security video shows Torres and the victim going into the locker room, charges say. A medical exam at the local hospital showed she suffered injuries that are consistent with rape.

If Torres is convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison and up to a $40,000 fine.

Sexual assaults at school

Reports of sexual assaults on college campuses have been making headlines in Minnesota lately, but it's also a problem in middle school and high school. A Washington Post report from earlier this year says students in high school – and even younger – have reported being sexually assaulted in school bathrooms, stairwells, cars in the school parking lot, at dances, athletic events and on overnight trips.

A 2008 study found that 39 percent of sexual assaults reported by high school students happened at school – that equates to about one in five high school girls being sexually assaulted while on school grounds, Al Jazeera America said.

Most of the incidents reported in the study mentioned above involved unwanted kissing, hugging or sexual touching, Al Jazeera said. But high school students are also victims of rape – a 2015 survey by the CDC found 10.3 percent of female students and 3.1 percent of male students nationwide reported being forced to have sex when they didn't want to.

This fall, the White House highlighted the need to combat sexual assault in K-12 schools, and launched an interactive tool that's designed to help schools prevent and eliminate sexual harassment and violence between students. It also put out guidance for school districts to consider for their sexual misconduct policy.

If you are a victim of sexual assault, RAINN has information on steps you can take, including contacting local service providers, who can help guide you through getting the care you need and reporting the incident to proper authorities.
