A University of Minnesota student is accused of trafficking ecstasy out of his dorm room.

Spencer Nichols, 18, was charged with two felonies: first-degree drug sale of 50 or more grams of a narcotic in a 90-day span and second-degree drug possession, according to the criminal complaint.

Nichols was arrested after consenting to a search of his dorm room Tuesday, the complaint says. Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U of M found a vacuum sealer with bags, two digital scales, and over $26,000 in cash.

During the search, Nichols told officers he had purchased "molly" (ecstasy) online in the past, and that he was expecting another package to be delivered to him at his dorm in Centennial Hall, the complaint says.

The next day, authorities say the package arrived – containing more than 50 grams of MDMA.

The complaint does not say what led authorities to Nichols, only that it was part of an on-going investigation involving narcotics and the dark web.

Nichols is being held on $75,000 bail and is expected to make his first court appearance Friday afternoon.

If he's convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine for the drug sale charge. Second-degree possession carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and $500,000 in fines.

According to the Star Tribune, Nichols is a native of Rochester. He was in his first semester on campus and enrolled in the bioscience program.
