Chaska man killed in crash that shutdown Hwy. 212 Monday
Icy roads factored in a fatal crash on Highway 212 in Carver County Monday morning.
According to the State Patrol, snow and ice covered the highway when a 50-year-old man driving a Dodge Dart lost control on eastbound Hwy. 12, crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound transit van.
The driver of the Dodge, identified as Jeritt D. Piotter, of Chaska, died at the scene, the crash report says.
A 45-year-old Apple Valley man who was driving the transit van suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Two Twelve Medical Center in Chaska for care.
The crash shutdown both directions of Hwy. 12 near Kelly Ave. for multiple hours as the State Patrol reconstructed the crash as part of its investigation.
There were 314 crashes and 64 spinouts statewide between 5 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Monday, including 33 injury crashes.
Frigid temperatures combined with light snow the past two days has caused hazardous road conditions in and around the metro. According to the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, cold weather like Minnesota is currently experiencing causes roads to freeze quickly while snow and ice melting tools don't work.
The National Weather Service is expecting another round of light snow Thursday morning.
