Check it out: 2 St. Paul libraries to get dramatic makeovers

Two aging St. Paul libraries are slated for sunny, modern makeovers.

The multi-million renovations for the Highland Park and Sun Ray libraries will flood the buildings with natural light, the Pioneer Press reports.

As it is, the 43-year-old Sun Ray library is not aptly named – but $5.5 million in improvements aim to change that, the Pioneer Press notes. A dramatic, glassy redesign will create improved visibility to Wilson Avenue, a public plaza, more car and bike parking and an exterior book drop, as well as an outdoor reading garden. The building will also add 2,500 square feet of public space.

Highland Park improvements also call for energy-efficient lighting and more natural daylight. The library intends to add parking space and revamp 5,000 square feet into public space. Other renovations will create a "teen zone" with a technology station, meeting space and study rooms, and additional Internet stations, as well as an expanded children's area.

“There’s a pretty big focus on the entryways — making them more connected to the street and to the people outside,” Jill Boldenow, the library system’s community and digital services director, told the Star Tribune on Thursday.
