Chemical-free pool in North Minneapolis makes a splash on opening day

With a steamy weekend ahead, there's a new place in town to cool off.

North Minneapolis made a splash Friday by opening a public swimming pool that's the first of its kind in North America.

Hundreds took a dip on opening day, KSTP reports.

Webber Pool is the continent's first chemical-free, natural filtration public pool.

Rather than using chemicals such as chlorine to filter the water, the pool has a natural filtration system that uses plants from a nearby pond, as well as limestone and granite, according to WCCO.

The pool was supposed to open in 2014 but was beset by construction issues and red tape that delayed the project.

And despite opening Friday, KSTP reports there are still some bumps; the vacuums purchased for cleaning it are not working properly, meaning employees spend up to 16 hours-a-day cleaning it manually.

It's for this reason the pool will only open from Friday-Sunday this summer, with the Minneapolis Park Board hoping to open it every day starting next year.

Webber Natural Swimming Pool is located in Webber Park, at 4300 Webber Parkway in Minneapolis and it's free.

It is open from 1-7 p.m. Friday, Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day weekend, including Monday, Sept. 7.
