Chew, chew: Best bets on where to dine on the Green Line

Starting this weekend, Metro Transit's Green Line 24-hour light-rail service will make it possible for diners to sample scores of restaurants along the line, without ever getting into their cars or searching (and paying!) for parking.

The OnTheGreenLine website identifies numerous businesses that will be easily accessible and adjacent to the new tracks. There is a "restaurants and bars" category, and foodies may also be interested in the "grocery and liquor" category, which will direct them to ethnic markets and specialty stores. The site allows searching by district. There is also an OnTheGreenLine Facebook page.

The Pioneer Press helpfully compiled a list – and a map – of what food critic Jess Fleming calls "some of the best ethnic restaurants in the Twin Cities." She names a dozen St. Paul eateries that are within a block or two of the light-rail line, complete with an estimate of the walking time necessary to get to the restaurant. She picked mostly smaller mom-and-pop style cafes that offer reasonably-priced fare.

Her picks for the best spots to stop are:

  • Bangkok Thai Deli: 333 University Ave. – Asian
  • Mai Village: 394 University Ave. – Asian
  • Royal Bangkok: 315 University Ave. – Asian
  • Big Daddy's: 625 University Ave. – Barbecue
  • Daily Diner Frogtown: 615 University Ave. – Diner fare
  • iPho by Saigon: 704 University Ave. – Asian
  • Homi: 864 University Ave. – Mexican
  • Ngon Bistro: 799 University Ave. – Asian
  • On's Thai Kitchen: 1613 University Ave. – Asian
  • Fasika: 510 N. Snelling Ave. – Ethiopian
  • Foxy Falafel: 767 Raymond Ave. – Middle Eastern
  • Caffe Biaggio: 2356 University Ave. – Italian
