Chief of Fridley Fire Department dies unexpectedly over the weekend

Mike Spencer, the chief of the Fridley Fire Department, died unexpectedly over the weekend.

His death was announced by Fridley Public Safety on Sunday: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Fridley Fire Chief Mike Spencer. Chief Spencer passed away unexpectedly last night." 

Spencer, who also served as the deputy director of public safety, suffered a medical emergency at his home, according to FOX 9. No further information about his death has been released. 

"We know the amazing Fridley community will be here to support his family, friends and the Fridley Public Safety Department during this difficult time," the public safety department said in its announcement. 

Spencer was named fire chief in 2019.
