Child abandoned outdoors on North Shore, mother later arrested
Police have arrested a mother after a 6-year-old child was found abandoned near the Canadian border in northeastern Minnesota.
The girl was found on the side of Hwy. 61 in the Grand Portage area Thursday night.
A pair of good samaritans – identified as Daniel Deschampe Sr. and Delwyn Wilson – had stopped and were keeping the girl warm when police arrived.
"A parent had abandoned the 6-year old child without proper winter clothing, no socks, and no shoes" the Cook County Sheriff's Office said.
The deputies took emergency custody of the child, and were able to locate her mother. She was arrested and is being held in Cook County Jail.
She is now awaiting her first court appearance.
Cook County Public Health and Human Services are assisting with the child's care as the investigation continues. Police say drugs are not suspected.
Sheriff Pat Eliasen stated, "The quick and decisive actions of the two men led to a positive outcome for this child. Thanks to Daniel and Delwyn, and to all who stepped in to assist this child in a time of great need."
