Child dies after gun discharges inside southwest Minnesota home

A child died after being struck by a bullet in southwest Minnesota on Wednesday. 

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office issued a release saying a weapon inside the home discharged, with the bullet fatally wounding the child. It happened in Heron Lake, a town of about 700 people southwest of Windom. 

The child was transported to the Windom Area Hospital but did not survive. 

The child's identity and age have not been released and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

The Heron Lake Ambulance and Heron Lake Police Department also responded to the 911 call.
