Chili's is slashing its menu by 40 percent

To avoid the fate of competitors, Chili's is slashing its menu instead of its restaurants.

The Tex-Mex chain announced on Friday it'll reduce the size of its expansive menu by around 40 percent, down from 125 items to 75.

There's no word on everything that's being removed from the menu, but Chili's president Kelli Valade did say that mango chili tilapia, buffalo fried cauliflower and crispy asparagus are among the items not making the cut.

Chili's will be focusing more specifically on its more popular, core menu items, namely burgers, ribs and fajitas, investing more into ingredients to improve their quality.

The trimmed down menu will go live nationwide on Sept. 18. It's an attempt to reverse a huge menu that according to Adage led to criticism it had diluted the quality of its signature items, put pressure on kitchen staff and led to frustration for diners who had to wait longer for their meals.

"Guests have also told us they know that today no restaurant can be everything to everyone. So, by eliminating 40 percent of our menu, we've reinvested in meatier burgers, ribs and fajitas – the items that we've always been known for," Valade said.

Take a look at the Chili's menu and it's not hard to be overwhelmed.

Its menu categories alone are extensive, comprising: For the Table (sharers), Wings, Triple Dippers, Soup, Chili, Salad, Side Salads, Sandwiches, Craft Burgers, Burger Patty, Steaks, Babyback Ribs, Smokehouse Combos, Fajitas, Quesadillas, Top Shelf Tacos, Fresh Mex Bowls, Enchiladas, Lighter Choices, Crispers, Signature Sides, Classic Sides, Sweet Stuff.

And that's not even going into the drinks and cocktail menus.

"We apologize to any Guest who misses a departed dish, but with this bold move we commit to all Guests to do a better job of serving our famous food on every visit, in every restaurant," Chili's said.
