A Chisholm man is accused of repeatedly raping and beating a teenage girl who had fallen asleep in a friend's parked car.

Owoidighe Ekanem, 34, was charged Tuesday with kidnapping and sexual assault in connection with the Oct. 9 incident, according to the Northland News Center.

The girl, who is from Virginia, said she was in the car in the Chisholm Disc Golf Course parking lot, waiting for a friend to meet her. The girl said she fell asleep about 1 a.m., and was awakened by someone knocking on the car window.

Thinking it was either her friend or a police officer, the girl opened the car door. Instead it was the suspect, whom the girl didn't know. He began threatening her and took her phone away as she was trying to call police.

According to the criminal complaint, Ekanem pulled the girl out of the car by her hair, hit her in the face several times and tied her sweatshirt around her head to obscure her vision, the News Center reports.

The suspect then put the girl into his own vehicle, drove to a wooded area and raped her, according to the complaint. He then drove to another location where he forced the girl into the back seat of his vehicle and raped her again, the Star Tribune reports.

The girl told police Ekanem then dropped her off near her car and drove away. She said the ordeal lasted about 45 minutes, the newspaper notes.

She was taken to an area hospital and treated for a broken nose, according to police.

The victim said the suspect smelled heavily of alcohol, and police later determined Ekanem had been drinking at a couple of local bars for several hours prior to the incident.

Ekanem's estranged wife told police he becomes "a monster" when he drinks, according to the Northland News Center.

Ekanem denied to police that he was involved in the attack, saying he was at a friend's house at the time. He is in jail on $250,000 bail and will make his first court appearance Thursday, the Star Tribune reports.
