City Pages, popular Twin Cities alternative magazine, bought by Star Tribune

Some big changes on the Minneapolis print scene, where the city's leading newspaper has bought a smaller, but popular alternative weekly periodical.

The Star Tribune reports that its parent company, Star Tribune Media Co., is buying City Pages from Voice Media Co. in a deal whose terms are not yet known.

Tribune's own entertainment weekly Vita.mn, a City Pages competitor, will be shut down as a result.

“The acquisition will give us a larger footprint in our home market and allow us to grow our audience and our advertising revenue,” a Star Tribune marketing official said.

City Pages will continue to run independently and with its current editors place – and company officials said they will "keep their hands off" the weekly's reporting, which the paper admits has often been critical of the Star Tribune.

The article indicates the staff will also remain on board, but writer Ben Johnson tweeted that he has already lost his job as part of the acquisition:
