City will hold emergency meeting following shooting at Stargate nightclub

50-plus shots were fired and five people were injured.

Officials in Maplewood are holding a special city council meeting after five people were injured following at shooting at Stargate nightclub early Saturday morning.

Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawik called for the meeting to discuss the incident and consider possible licensing sanctions and additional operating conditions for the nightclub, the Maplewood Police Department says.

The meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Maplewood City Hall.

The shooting

The shooting happened at Stargate around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police said. A dispute inside the club led to a man being shot in the leg, and then when people ran out of the club, more than 50 shots were fired.

Five people were injured, police said, but no one seriously, Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell told the Pioneer Press.

Police continue to investigate, and are asking anyone with information on who or where the shooters are to contact the police department anonymously. All you have to do is text the keyword "Maplewood" followed by what you know to 847411.

This isn't the first time police have investigated an incident at Stargate. Back in 2015, a security guard was attacked, which ended when the guard fatally shooting one of the attackers. And in 2011, three people were injured in a stabbing.

“I know [the owner] has invested a lot of time, effort and real money to try to make this business go, but this can’t go on,” Schnell told the Star Tribune following this weekend's incident, noting the owner has been cooperating.

At Wednesday's meeting, the city could temporary close Stargate, suspend or revoke its license, require more security, or be required to add more technology measures, among other things, the Star Tribune notes.
