Closures on I-694 and I-494 expected to cause delays this weekend

The closures will affect the north and the south metro.

Travelers in the north and south metro can expect delays this weekend with closures on both I-694 and I-494.

I-494 will shut between I-35E in Inver Grove Heights and Hwy. 5 near MSP Airport starting at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

It's happened as MnDOT installs a pipe beneath the interstate, as part of a larger project on I-494 to repave the road, update draining and repair seven bridges between the Minnesota River and South St. Paul.

It's one of 14 full or partial closures of the stretch of road for the project, which is due to be completed, weather permitting, in fall 2020.

Drivers will be detoured via I-35E and Highway 77/Cedar Avenue. You should also be aware that ramps onto westbound I-494 from Dodd Road, I-35E and Pilot Knob Road will close at 7 p.m.

In the north metro, I-694 will also be closing this weekend between Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills and Rice Street in Shoreview.

MnDOT is removing the old Rice Street overpass as part of the wider reconstruction of the interchange, with both directions of the interstate closing at 10 p.m. Friday.

The good news for those planning on attending Twins and Vikings games this weekend as there are no significant closures of I-35W or I-94.
