The quick thinking of deputies in Stearns County helped save the life of a man who was injured in a freak forklift accident.

The incident happened at First Choice Food & Beverage at 6510 Galaxy Road in St. Augusta at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday.

The caller to police reported a worker – identified as Mark Lieser, 53, of Avon – had been thrown from a forklift and had hit his head on the floor, leaving him unconscious and not breathing.

When deputies arrived, co-workers were giving CPR, with deputies taking over until a Mayo ambulance arrived.

Lieser was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment, and was alert and talking while being transported.

"Initial investigation revealed Mr. Lieser was operating a standing style forklift and had the forks in a lifted position," the Stearns County Sheriff's Office said.

"The forks hit the wall above the garage door causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor."

The sheriff's office said his co-workers' quick life-saving measures likely saved his life.
