The Cold Spring City Council is honoring the memory of Tom Decker by retiring the slain police officer's badge number, KSTP-TV reports.

Decker, 31, was fatally shot in November. A Cold Spring man police sought to question in the case killed himself in January, and the investigation is ongoing.

Decker wore badge No. 6402, which will no longer be used by the department. The department has eight full-time officers and eight part-time officers.

According to the St. Cloud Times, Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones requested the resolution, which was passed unanimously at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

A formal ceremony is expected to take place when the badge is officially retired.

The Times reports that members of Decker's family as well as some of Decker's colleagues will fly to Washington, D.C., in May to attend National Police Week. The officer's name will be added to the National Peace Officers Memorial at that time.

Thousands of people honored Decker when he was laid to rest in December.
