Community group hopes to install billboard to get neighbor a kidney
A community group is raising money to install a billboard in hopes of finding a Prior Lake man a kidney.
Ted Schweich is among the more than 100,000 people on a waiting list to get a new kidney. And an effort from his friends and family, who call themselves "Team Ted" is hoping to find him a kidney sooner.
They set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to buy billboard space in the Twin Cities to find him a living donor match. They also plan to use the money for some other media outreach efforts.
"If we can get a kidney donor for Ted, he can bypass the waitlist, get off dialysis and have a better quality of life," the page says.
If a voluntary donor is found through the billboard campaign but isn't a good match for Schweich, the page notes that if the donor agrees to save another life by still donating a kidney, Schweich will be up next for a new kidney from a transplant chain of other donors.
"Time is running out for Ted and any donation for the billboard and its production is appreciated so we can get the word out for Ted. It only takes one donor to touch Ted's life and many others," the page adds.
The page launched this week, raising more than $2,300 in a single day. As of Friday afternoon, it had raised $3,890 of its $5,000 goal.
