The Minnesota Municipal Power Agency started construction of a $30 million renewable energy plant in Le Sueur, MPR reports.

The facility will collect agricultural and food processing waste to produce a source of electricity for the city. The plant will also help MMPA reach a state mandate requiring a quarter of its power to come from renewable sources by 2025.

The waste itself, chicken manure, potato-processing residues and corn silage, has been a major point of contention during the city's approval process. Opponents said it would attract vermin and give off unpleasant odors.

About half a dozen workers will be employed at the plant once it's up and running. Around 100 jobs were created during the construction phase.
