This time, convicted sex offender Rex Lee Furman may go to prison for the rest of his life.

A federal jury has found the 52-year-old Federal Dam, Minnesota, man guilty of a number of child pornography charges, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

The investigation into Furman's online activities began in 2013 and led to a police search at his home, where agents discovered computers that contained hundreds of images and videos depicting young children – two of whom were in his care.

According to the release, at the time of the search, Furman admitted to producing "images depicting the genitalia" of the two girls, who were four and five-years-old at the time.

The trial took three days, and the jury deliberated for only two hours before returning the guilty verdict against Furman.

Records show this was not the first time he had taken advantage of young children under his watch. In 1981, Furman pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a five-year-old in his care, and was convicted in 1999 of a similar charge – only this time, the victim was 10.

For the second offense, he was required to register as a sex offender until the year 2021, the U.S. attorney's office says.

Now, the punishment for this offense is far harsher: he is facing a "mandatory sentence" of life in prison "due to his prior convictions."

A sentencing date has not been set.

The case, the release notes, came about thanks to the efforts of Project Safe Childhood, a "nationwide initiative" that brings together law enforcement and communities to raise awareness of and prevent the sexual exploitation of minors, according to its website.

It was started in 2006 and is a program of the U.S. Justice Department.
