MN cop clampdown busts texters, flossers for distracted driving

That's the message law enforcement sent to distracted drivers during a statewide enforcement ion April 18, according to the Star Tribune. The crackdown yielded 71 tickets and 39 written warnings for driver offenses ranging from texting, reading Facebook, and e-mailing mom, the paper reports.

Last week police celebrated National Distracted Driving Awareness Month--sponsored by the National Safety Council, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration--all around Minnesota. In total, they issued issued 694 citations and issued 1,633 warnings on April 18, though not all were for Tweeting. Run-of-the-mill violations like speeding, driving without a seat belt and invalid licenses were also cited.

Scary tidbit!: A survey conducted by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety found that 40 percent of respondents said they text or e-mail while driving and more than half read such missives on the glory of the open road.
