Corn planting in Minnesota continues to lag behind average

Minnesota farmers finally made some planting progress last week after a soggy and snowy April, the Pioneer Press reports.

However, only 18 percent of the state's corn crop has been planted as of Sunday, compared with the usual 68 percent, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department's latest crop report.

Farmers in Minnesota intend to plant more corn this year than ever before, the USDA said earlier this year.

Despite the late start, MPR says some farmers are still optimistic about this year's crop.

In Iowa, the nation's largest corn producer, only 15 percent of its corn acreage is in the ground, Radio Iowa reports. That's the slowest start in 20 years.

Wisconsin farmers are also behind with only 14 percent of their crop planted.
