A correctional officer was seriously injured at Sherburne County Jail in Elk River after being assaulted by an inmate.
The 50-year-old man, who has been a correctional officer for 16 years, was injured in the attack just after 11:30 a.m. Monday.
The officer walked past a 24-year-old inmate who was on the phone, who then attacked him from behind, striking him on the right side of the head.
The inmate continued the assault while the officer was on the ground, striking him multiple times in the head.
Other officers then intervened and detained the inmate, who told officers he hadn't had any previous contact with his victim, but "had a hatred for all law enforcement," per a press release from Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott.
"That, along with other issues, built up to the point that he was going to assault the next officer he saw, no matter who it was," the sheriff's office said.
The suspect was being held on federal 1st-degree aggravated robbery charges. He could not face federal charges of assaulting a correctional officer.
The correctional officer is expected to make a full recovery.
