Eastbound I-494 has been closed and will stay closed for an "extended period of time" following a crash in the south Twin Cities.

The situation is ongoing on I-494 at France Avenue, with the interstate closing eastbound at Hwy. 100 until the scene is cleared.

There are tailbacks currently involving the vehicles that are already on the road, which are being let past in the left lane until the road is clear.

At this stage details on the crash are limited, but the State Patrol did describe it as a "serious injury crash."

Drivers are being advised to take an alternative route. It's not clear at this stage how long the freeway will be closed for.
