Crash kills unbelted driver in St. Croix County, WI

Authorities in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, are investigating a crash that killed a man overnight.

The wreck happened near the 3200 block of 50th Ave. in Cady Township, which is about 25 miles from the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.

According to a news release, a construction worker discovered the crashed 2008 Ford Explorer and reported it to authorities at about 5:29 a.m. The driver was soon pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner. It's not yet clear what time the crash occurred.

The deceased has been identified as 57-year-old Daniel M. Gibson of Knapp, Wisconsin, about 11 miles northeast of the accident site. 

Gibson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The local sheriff's says this is St. Croix County's ninth traffic fatality so far this year; according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the state has seen 271 traffic-related deaths in 2019.
