The widespread wildfires that caused major damage in northwest Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin are now under control.

The 7,000-acre Green Valley fire that flared up near Menagha, Minn. on Tuesday, destroying 12 homes and dozens of other structures, was 80 percent contained Friday.

Fire crews used a helicopter to locate hotspots and put them out on foot.

Saturday's rain should help firefighters further contain the fire, the Associated Press reported. Landowners in the area will be visited by officials to discuss rehabilitation needs.

Scattered rainfall is expected to greatly assist mop-op operations in northwest Wisconsin where a more than 8,000-acre wildfire devastated the Townships of Gordon and Highland in Douglas County.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 47 structures were lost, 17 of which were homes, in the largest forest fire to hit the area in 33 years.

Fire officials confirmed the blaze was ignited by logging equipment on Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday evening, the fire was 100 percent contained, but fire crews will continue to monitor for hot spots over the next few days.
