Wisconsin's DNR is wrestling with a difficult cleanup task more than a week after a truck crashed into the Red Cedar River near Menominee, dumping tons of fertilizer into the water.

A report in the Hudson Star Observer says more than 23,000 pounds of lawn fertilizer containing a herbicide were in the truck that slid off Interstate 94 in a snowstorm, killing two people.

The DNR's spill coordinator says the task is challenging: the chemicals are in 25 feet of water under an ice sheet at the foot of a steep riverbank. Crews want to clean as much of the spill as possible before meltwaters carry the chemicals downstream.

In the first days after the March 5th crash, the focus was on searching for the two Minneapolis men who were in the truck and pulling the vehicle out of the river.

Cleanup crews are encouraged that there are no signs of fish dying in the spill area.

The cleanup is delaying construction of a new bridge at the site.
