Authorities are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains at the construction site of a new CVS Pharmacy in Hastings Wednesday afternoon, the Hastings Star Gazette reports.

Crews reportedly contacted the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension after the discovery of the remains, which in turn sent the medical examiner's office to the scene. A team of archeologists was also instructed to recover the remains.

WCCO says the remains are being tested at the Hamline anthropology lab. If the bones are determined to be more than 50 years old, it will be an archaeological investigation, and if they are less than 50 years old, a criminal one, the station says.

Hastings Chief of Police Bryan Schafer says early indications are that the remains have been there "many years," the Star Gazette reports.

Schafer also tells FOX 9 that the site where the remains were discovered is being treated like a crime scene for now, but authorities don't believe a crime was committed and it is likely an old grave site.
