The 23-year-old man who authorities say struck two sheriff's deputies with gunfire during a shootout in rural Polk County was charged in court Friday with attempted murder.

Michael Jon Perry, a 23-year-old Crookston man, faces four counts of first degree attempted murder of a peace officer for the Thursday afternoon incident, in which authorities say a man began firing at a group of officers from inside a residence.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian Lundeen, 44, was hit in the back of his bullet-resistant vest. He was later treated and released from the hospital. Investigator Nathan Rasch, 36, was grazed by a bullet on the back of his bullet-resistant vest and didn't require any treatment.

According to a press release from the Department of Public Safety:

Law enforcement from Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Crookston Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a call of shots fired shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday at a house just south of Crookston.

As deputies spoke with family members outside of the home, authorities say Perry began firing at them form inside the residence. A total of nine officers returned fire and took cover and Perry continued firing, which is when Lundeen and Rasch were hit.

Perry came out of the home while still firing, and attempted to flee in a vehicle.

Law enforcement stopped the vehicle as it left the property, and Perry surrendered.

Perry sustained a single gunshot wound during the incident, and was taken to Riverview Hospital in Crookston where he was treated and released. He was then booked into the Tri-County Community Corrections facility.

No one inside the home was injured.

The Crookston Times says Perry was hit in the leg.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating with assistance from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Crookston and East Grand Forks police departments, Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota DNR. Once its investigation is complete, the BCA will turn its findings over to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for review.

The Department of Public Safety listed all nine officers who fired their weapons during the incident:
