A man fleeing police died in a fiery crash Sunday evening when his pickup truck smashed into a concrete bridge pillar in Crookston.

Police were called to do a welfare check on 27-year-old Dominic Herkenhoff around 6 p.m., but when they showed up he got in his pickup truck and rammed a Crookston squad car, before taking off down Highway 2 at a "high rate of speed," according to the Minnesota State Patrol accident report.

The Crookston Times says the driver apparently lost control near the railroad underpass and struck the bridge support. His truck burst into flames.

Witnesses told the newspaper they could hear the crash from blocks away.

More information is expected to be released Monday, WDAY reports.

This wasn't the only police chase over the weekend. A Horicon, Wisconsin, man died Saturday night after he fled police on his motorcycle, but less than a minute later struck a utility pole and was killed, the Beaver Dam Daily Citizen reports.

Speed and alcohol are believed to have played a factor in the crash, the newspaper says.

In another incident Sunday evening, a 34-year-old Moorhead man was taken into custody after leading police on a chase through three northwestern Minnesota cities.

Police initially stopped him for speeding after getting reports of an aggressive driver, but the suspect fled police, speeding through several residential areas before police used a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect's vehicle and arrest him, InForum reports.

The suspect is also accused of stopping at a Barnesville gas station and leaving without paying before officers tracked him down, InForum says.

Police believe he may have been under the influence of a controlled substance, InForum notes.

A Fargo man is also facing several charges after leading police on a high-speed motorcycle chase from West Fargo to Jamestown, North Dakota, Sunday, Valley News Live reports.

In a police pursuit early Monday morning, WCCO says two suspects in a stolen van led police on a chase, but were arrested when the vehicle crashed into a White Bear Lake, Minnesota, home.

A woman was sleeping nearby, but wasn't injured, the news station says.

Police took the two suspects into custody, WCCO notes. The van had reportedly been stolen from somewhere in Ramsey County.
