A frightening accident during a circus performance in Blaine Friday night resulted in a performer being struck in the neck by an arrow.

Police were dispatched to the Northtown Mall parking lot – the sight of the Cirque Italia Water Circus – at approximately 8:35 p.m. after a 28-year-old woman performing in the show was hit in the neck by an arrow fired from a crossbow.

The woman's injury did not appear to be serious, according to police, and she was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.

The duo involved in the act are husband and wife who have been performing together for years.

"We include a bow and arrow act with a live target so it is a husband and wife duo, and he shoots arrows at balloons she is holding," a circus spokesperson said told FOX 9. "Unfortunately, last night there was a malfunction of some sort, and the arrow hit her in the neck."

The arrow act has been put on hold but Cirque Italia Water Circus show put on another performance Saturday night, and will do so again in Blaine Sunday and Monday. They're also scheduled to perform this month in St. Paul (Sept. 5-8), Duluth (Sept. 12-15), Eau Claire (Sept. 19-22) and La Crosse (Sept. 26-29).
