Crude, anti-Muslim Facebook post from official MN GOP group targets Rep. Ellison

The photo with caption was posted by the official Minnesota 7th Congressional District Republican Party Facebook account.

A Facebook post from the official Minnesota 7th Congressional District Republican Party calls U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison a "head Muslim goat humper."

The post, which went up at 4:59 p.m., includes a photo of Ellison out turkey hunting. It was still up as of 6:45 p.m. but was later taken down. Here's a screengrab we took before it was deleted.

The post however isn't even directed at Ellison.

Instead it's pitched as a negative attack on Rep. Collin Peterson – the Democrat who currently represents Minnesota's 7th Congressional District, and recently said he intends to run again in 2018. Peterson, who leans conservative as a Democrat, has held that seat for 14 terms now.

Two Republicans have filed with the Federal Elections Commission as challengers: David Hughes and Tim Miller.

The person responsible has resigned

The state Republican Party chair Jennifer Carnahan called for "the immediate resignation of the person responsible for this action," though she did not identify that person.

Carnahan confirmed just after 9:45 p.m. that the individual had resigned.

Reactions to the post

In a post on Facebook, Carnahan called the post "repugnant hate speech" and said it does not reflect the party.

Republican activists elected Carnahan on Saturday to succeed Keith Downey as party chair.

Minnesota's DFL chariman, Ken Martin, said in a statement Monday evening: “The ignorance and bigotry displayed in this post is staggering and disheartening."

“Congressman Ellison has been a champion of inclusiveness in our state and across the country, and works tirelessly every day to make Minnesota a welcoming place for all, regardless of ethnicity or religion. This disgusting, racist and hateful sentiment has no place in Minnesota," Martin wrote.

He also called for an apology from Carnahan to Rep. Ellison and all of Minnesota.

Ellison on Tuesday tweeted a thanks to Martin for the statement.

Ellison, who is Muslim, has denied claims he's anti-Semitic and has worked for years to distance himself from Louis Farrakhan, the head of Nation of Islam. When he was a student nearly three decades ago, Ellison wrote articles defending Farrakhan.

The Minnesota 7th Congressional District Republican Party says on its website it works "to promote the conservative principles that made our state and country great."

It also notes: "We believe in using social media, (Facebook and Twitter) to interact with the voting public in vital news and commentary regarding American culture and the American experience. We hope this interaction will lead to more educated, conservative voters that will help us elect more Republican legislators."
