Cub Foods is helping families in need put food on the table this holiday season.

According to a news release, the Stillwater-based grocery store chain is donating more than 6,420 hams and turkeys to Second Harvest Heartland, one of the organizations in the state that works to address hunger and food insecurity. They will be distributed to local families for the holiday season.

The hams and turkeys are valued at $148,000 and will provide for more than 64,000 meals, the release says. That's a big help for the one out of every 10 people in Minnesota Second Harvest Heartland says will have trouble getting a holiday meal on their table this year.

“No one should go hungry during the holidays. Protein in the form of meat and poultry is one of the most expensive items for families who are trying to make ends meet. It’s also important for a nutritious diet, especially for growing children,” Rob Zeaske, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland said in the release. “We’re extremely grateful to Cub, Hormel Foods and Cub customers for these incredibly generous donations. Many families in our area will now have a brighter holiday.”

Grab a free ham sandwich at the donation event

The first donation of 420 cases of Hormel hams — 3,780 hams, weighing in at approximately 13,000 pounds — will be loaded onto trucks on Monday at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Cub Blaine West store.

The hams will then travel to Second Harvest Heartland and be distributed to local families through the food bank’s network of agency partners in time for holiday and New Year’s meals, the release says.

In celebration of the event, there will be free ham sandwiches provided for people who stop in the store between 10 and 11 a.m.

Also on Monday, 64,000 pounds of Essential Everyday brand turkeys worth $108,000 will be shipped directly to Second Harvest Heartland, thanks to Cub customers who participated in Cub’s “Thanks for Giving” campaign.

The campaign, which ran from Nov. 13 through Nov. 28, gave customers the chance to add a small donation to their checkout total. All the funds raised are going towards providing turkeys to families in need.

Want to help?

Second Harvest Heartland says donating money is the most efficient way to get food to the families who need a little extra help. Every $5 donated will provide 15 meals to those in need.

The food bank also accepts non-perishable food donations at both of their locations. You can find more information here.

You could also volunteer to serve meals or deliver meals through Open Arms of Minnesota.
