The Stearns County Sheriff tells the Associated Press that a driver ran a stop sign in Paynesville on Friday and struck and injured a man riding in an organized bike tour.

The Sheriff tells the AP that Gerald Johnson, 55, of Bemidji was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital.

The Star Tribune reports that Johnson was in serious condition Friday night with broken bones. He had been wearing a helmet, nursing supervisor Mary Loecken told the paper.

The St. Cloud Times reports Johnson was participating in the eighth annual "Bicycle Around Minnesota" tour traveling from Albany to Spicer. He was one of 275 bicyclists from 20 states and two Canadian provinces riding in the event. Friday was the second day of the tour.

A Tour spokeswoman told the Strib that she knew of no other collisions in the tour’s history. The incident briefly rerouted the tour.
