According to a criminal complaint, an Eagan father was intoxicated when he went to bed with his baby last October and accidentally smothered the boy.

The SunThisWeek reports that Nathan Scott Savage, 30, made his first court appearance in Dakota County on Tuesday. FOX 9 reported that Savage has been charged with three felony counts of second-degree manslaughter and gross misdemeanor charges of neglect and endangerment of a child.

Two-month-old Nolan Scott Sikich was pronounced dead at the hospital on Oct. 19. The Ramsey County medical examiner ruled the boy died from "asphyxia due to probable overlay" and classified the death as "accidental."

WCCO reports that Eagan Police were called to the residence where Savage lived with the child’s mother and first responders were unable to revive the baby. An officer spoke with Savage and believed he was intoxicated after smelling a strong odor of alcohol on him. Savage later admitted to police that he had been drinking the evening before.

Savage told police that sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight on Oct. 18, he laid the baby on the bed that he shares with the boy’s mother. Savage said that eventually they both fell asleep.

Savage told police it was not the first time the boy had slept in bed with his parents. "This tragedy underscores the great danger associated with co-sleeping with an infant," Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said.

Savage is set to appear in court again on May 27 in Hastings.
