Remembrances are scheduled Wednesday on the 150th anniversary of the largest mass execution in United States history, marking the end of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.

On the cold morning of Dec. 26, 1862, thousands of spectators gathered in Mankato and watched as 38 Dakota men were led out of a prison to a scaffold and hanged.

Dakota and non-Dakota members of the community will mark the anniversary with a number of events.

A memorial horse ride is expected to arrive in Mankato Wednesday after covering 300 miles in South Dakota. The riders on horseback will be joined by 50 or 60 Dakota men who set out midnight Christmas Day from Fort Snelling State Park to run in relays along U.S. 169.

A ceremony will take place at Reconciliation Park, the former execution site, where a monument will be dedicated.
