Dayton postpones hip surgery to attend Mondale funeral

Gov. Mark Dayton said Tuesday that he's putting off his previously planned hip surgery at Mayo Clinic to attend the funeral for Joan Mondale this weekend.

Mondale, an ardent arts advocate and the wife of former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale, died Monday at the age of 83. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis.

Dayton's surgery, which was slated for Thursday, has been rescheduled for next week.

The 67-year-old governor underwent a procedure at Mayo last fall to alleviate pain in his hip after suffering a muscle tear last summer. Another tumble in January sent Dayton back to Mayo for stability issues.

Next week's surgery will put Dayton in a brace for up to three months, which could restrict some travel, but Dayton says the recovery will not affect his job or campaign schedule.
