Gov. Mark Dayton will reveal his choice for Al Franken's Senate replacement on Wednesday morning.

His office confirmed he will make the announcement at 10 a.m.. The person he appoints will take Franken's place on an interim basis.

Franken announced last week he will be resigning from his position in the coming weeks, following allegations of sexual harassment.

Whomever Dayton appoints will take up a seat in the Senate until November next year, when a special election will be held. The winner of that special election will serve out the rest of Franken's term, then face re-election in 2020 (when Franken's term was up).

The favorite to be appointed by Dayton is Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith.

She was initially thought to be interested in serving on an interim basis, but didn't plan on running for the Democratic ticket in the special election. However, the Pioneer Press reported she is now mulling a 2018 run.
