Deadline: Ice shanties must be removed from southern lakes by midnight

Weather has been warming up, melting snow and creating some dangerous conditions for ice fishermen. But Monday officially marks the day all ice houses need to be off lakes in southern parts of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says anglers who have ice shelters out in the southern two-thirds of the state have until midnight to get them removed. That includes any shanties south of highway 200, which stretches east and west from Duluth to the Fargo area.

Anglers north of that line have an extra two weeks on the lakes. That deadline is March 21 at midnight.

People who fish lakes along the Minnesota-Canada border have until March 31 to keep their houses out.

Deadlines to remove houses along Iowa, Wisconsin and Dakota borders have already passed.

If the ice houses aren't removed in time, owners will be prosecuted, the DNR says. The structure and its contents may also be removed, confiscated or destroyed by a conservation officer.

After these dates, people can still bring their ice houses out on lakes, but only between midnight and one hour before sunrise and as long as the structure is occupied.

The DNR also reminds people to clean up before leaving the lakes.
