One person died and two others were injured in a crash near Alexandria Wednesday.

The Minnesota State Patrol reports the collision happened around 10:40 a.m. on Hwy. 29 near Hiebel Road in Lake Mary Township, which is just a couple of miles south of Interstate 94 and Alexandria in Douglas County.

The report says a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee was going north on Hwy. 29 near Hiebel Road when it crossed the center line and collided with a 2015 Dodge Caravan.

Both vehicles rolled after making contact, with the Caravan coming to a rest on its wheels in the ditch and the Jeep coming to a rest on its roof.

The driver of the Caravan was pronounced dead at the scene. She's been identified as Betty Ann Bengtson, 61, of Alexandria.

A 60-year-old Alexandria woman riding as a passenger in the Caravan, and a 59-year-old Colorado man driving the Jeep, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for care.

There have been 210 deaths on Minnesota roads this year compared to 206 at the same time in 2018, according to the Minnesota Department of Traffic Safety.
