Dear Minnesota: Dear White People hits Netflix in April, but didn't film here this time

The Dear White People Netflix series will be 10 episodes, at a half hour apiece.

Minnesota got the movie, but we didn't get the show.

Netflix's new seriesDear White People – based upon the 2014 filmDear White People – will be available on the streaming service starting April 28.

"Based on the acclaimed indie film, this series satirizes 'post-racial' America as students of color navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college," the Netfilx description reads. It's slated for 10 episodes, 30 minutes each.

Netflix announced the premiere date in a trailer released Wednesday. Here it is:

The film shot in Minnesota

The Dear White People film shot in a few spots around the Twin Cities, including the University of Minnesota, the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, and Summit Avenue in St. Paul.

Netflix however opted for a different location.

Lucinda Winter, executive director of Minnesota Film and Television, told GoMN the series didn't film in Minnesota, and there weren't really substantive discussions to do so either.

Winter said it became clear early on that Netflix was looking to film elsewhere.

More on the movie

The film got pretty good reviews overall, with a 79/100 average score on Metacritic. It was also a breakout hit at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. It was written, produced and directed by Justin Simien – who also wrote and directed the first episode of the Netflix series.

It also took advantage of the snowbate program offered by Minnesota Film and Television. It's a fund that gives rebates to filmmakers who decide to shoot in the state, up to 25 percent cash back for certain eligible costs.

That snowbate program gets public funding. Right now there are proposals in the state House and Senate to provide $13 million for the program in 2018. There's no full vote scheduled on them however, so it's unclear if that will end up being approved.
