December's first storm moves into Minnesota

To kick off an expected snowy and colder-than-normal month, December's first winter storm began moving into the state Monday and should stick around until Wednesday.

The northern half of Minnesota should see the brunt of the storm with more than a foot of snow expected in northeast Minnesota when it's all said and done. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for northern Minnesota through Wednesday evening.

Roadways are already becoming slippery in the northwest part of the state, where the Minnesota State Patrol responded to this jackknifed semi. (story continued below)

KSTP said a deadly crash was reported on Interstate 94 in St. Cloud.

In the Twin Cities, WCCO says snow will fall Monday afternoon and evening. Overnight, freezing drizzle and sleet could mix in for a messy commute Tuesday morning. The metro will likely see 1 to 3 inches by Wednesday, WCCO says.

KARE 11 predicts the lower snow totals will be found in the south metro with higher amounts expected in the northern suburbs.

But, like most forecasts, it's all subject to change.

"We are going to be right on the edge of either getting a significant amount of snow, or just a sloppy mess!" KSTP's Dave Dahl says. "A small deviation in the track of the storm could mean a huge change in this forecast."

OK, Part 1 is snow. Part 2 is numbing cold.

After the two-wave front moves through the state, below-zero temperatures are expected as early as Thursday night, WCCO says. Minnesota Public Radio said some morning lows this weekend could dip to as cold as 20 below zero.
