The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office has identified the body as 52-year-old Christopher John Quirk, of Chisholm, Minnesota. Quirk was reported missing by family members in 2018.

Quirk was last seen leaving the Range Rehab Center in Virginia, Minnesota, at 2 p.m. May 8, 2018. In an interview with CBS Duluth a year after his disappearance, Quirk's sister said he was at the rehab facility after becoming addicted to opioids following a car crash.

Original story

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office issued a release Thursday notifying the public that a dead body was found in in a wooded area.

The grim discovery was made by a person walking in the woods north of Virginia, Minnesota, along Hwy. 53 in Wuori Township just after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The person called 911 to report  what they believed to be a dead body. That assumption was proved correct by deputies who arrived at the scene.

"The body was badly decomposed and frozen," the sheriff's release says.

Authorities say the cause of death was likely self-inflicted and foul play is not suspected.

The victim's identity will be released pending notification of family members.
