Midday dense fog is creating intermittent difficult travel conditions in west-central Minnesota on Thursday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a dense fog advisory through 11 a.m. Friday.

"Use caution if traveling, and be prepared for rapid reductions in visibility and possible slick spots," the Twin Cities office of the NWS said. "Further expansion of the advisory may be necessary later today."

Visibility could decrease to a quarter-mile or less in areas of dense fog.

Counties included in the dense fog advisory are:

  • Benton
  • Chippewa
  • Isanti
  • Kanabec
  • Kandiyohi
  • Lac qui Parle
  • Meeker
  • McLeod
  • Mille Lacs
  • Morrison
  • Pope
  • Renville
  • Sherburne
  • Stearns
  • Stevens
  • Swift

The weather service says the fog could freeze and cause slick spots, especially on bridges, overpasses and sidewalks. Motorists are advised to turn on their headlights and leave plenty of distance behind other vehicles.
