Dense fog causes horrific crash between semi and van in Stearns County

Dense fog is believed to have played a role in the crash.

Dense fog in central Minnesota Thursday morning was a factor in a serious accident involving a semi and a van in Stearns County. 

Matthew McNamara, 43, from Cold Spring, was eastbound in his 2003 Dodge Caravan on County Road 146 when he was sideswiped by a semi as he attempted to cross County Road 7 in Fairhaven Township.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m., at which time there was a dense fog advisory in place, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the semi, a 60-year-old man from Hutchinson, attempted to swerve out of the way but couldn't avoid contact, with the collision sending both vehicles into the ditch. 

The driver of the van had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital by ambulance. His condition is unknown. 

The semi driver was uninjured.

Fairhaven Township is about 10-15 minutes due south of St. Cloud
